Meeting the Challenges Facing Cement Manufacturers Through Advanced Industrial Lubrication

 19th Apr 2012

Ask any businesses operating within the cement industrial sector what is the key challenge they face today and you will get the same answer: they are under increasing pressure to reduce costs and maximise productivity whilst trying to remain price-competitive and reducing their environmental impact.

For a cement manufacturer, extending the life of equipment is a critical requirement of lubrication. The cost of equipment damage, loss of production and associated labour expenditure due to poor lubrication means your customers operating in cement manufacturing should select lubricants which offer overall best value rather than just simply selecting on price.

Advancements in lubrication technology, especially in fully synthetic based products, have made significant breakthrough in extending equipment life and oil drain intervals in a range of industries. High quality, synthetic lubricants such as the Mobil SHC range deliver advantages which mineral oils cannot match. Under the severe operating conditions often experienced at a cement plant such as high temperatures, loads and pressures synthetic lubricants come into their own. Mobil SHV lubricants, for example, can last up to six times longer and the upper operating limit is typically higher than the maximum operating temperatures for high quality mineral oils.

Improved performance

At the Jordan Cement Company in Fuheis, the majority owned Lafarge site was experiencing unscheduled down time due to kiln bearings overheating. The kiln faced on-going stoppages due to support bearings over-heating, reaching temperatures of 65 degrees. Poor lubrication also resulted in increased bearing, maintenance and oils costs.

To rectify this problem the customer was advised to switch to Mobil SHC 639. Mobil SHC 600 series lubricants are supreme performance gear and bearing oils, designed to provide outstanding service in terms of equipment protection, oil life and problem-free operation. After changing four support bearings in the middle section to Mobil SHC 639, the company has experienced significant benefits. Over a 17-month period bearing overheating was totally prevented which resulted in an increase in revenue of $1,656,284 U.S Dollars.

Improving Energy Efficiency

As well as providing outstanding protection, recent ExxonMobil Lubrication research and development efforts have focused on helping customers achieve energy savings. To this end, ExxonMobil offers a range of products to help your customers operating in the cement sector reduce energy costs and lower their environmental footprint.

The Mobil SHC 600 series of high performance gear oils, already in widespread use across the cement industry due to its superior protection, can also reduce the power consumption of some gear box applications by up to 8% compared with mineral oils. This is a result of its low traction (internal friction) and high velocity index.

More recent developments include Mobil SHC Pegasus, a high performance natural gas engine oil to support cement companies that use natural gas engines to power their operation. Using breakthrough technologies, this new product optimises equipment productivity and protection and is the first engine oil formulation on the market helping to deliver real energy saving potential. Extensive independent university laboratory and field tests have demonstrated that the product helps reduce fuel consumption by up to 1.5% compared to Mobil Pegasus 1005 and 805 series, when tested in standard natural gas engine applications under controlled conditions.
