Edward Davey UK secretary of state teamed up with DECC Prime Minister Greg Barker to unveil the world’s largest offshore wind farm the London Array in Margate, Kent.
A staggering 175 wind turbines make up the enormous arsenal which are capable of generating up to a shocking 630 MegaWatts of electricity, which is enough to power nearly half a million homes
At a cost of £1.5 billion, the project was headed up by DONG Energy, E.ON and Masdar. The huge venture was made capable by the 6,700 people working together and over 75 organisations all doing their bit to make the wind farm a reality.
The development of the wind farm has not only benefitted larger businesses but smaller businesses as well, ranging from construction supply companies, cable manufacturers to Boat builders in brightlingsea and wind tower builders in Scotland.
Edward Davey spoke about the Array: “London Array is a big deal for offshore wind, a big deal for UK electricity supply and a big deal for inward investment into the UK. It’s the biggest offshore wind farm in the world.”
“It’s a bulk generator of power feeding into the diverse mix on our grid. Half a million homes will be London Array powered. This is good for good news for keeping our lights on and reducing carbon emissions. And it’s attracted billions of inward investment into our economy. Everyone involved is to be congratulated for this achievement.”
The Array is a huge achievement, not only for Britain but for the wind and renewable industry as a whole. If we can keep developing wind farms and capturing the energy that our planet gives us for free, we can surely start to seriously think about the possibility and practicality of sustaining our finite planet with little more than the wind in the air and the sun rays that beat down on us.
